Tip-over protection, and the other cutoffs

Four different mechanisms get sold as “safety features”, and they prevent four different things. Here is which is which.

A tip-over switch cuts power when the heater is no longer upright. Overheat protection cuts power when the internal temperature exceeds a limit, usually because airflow is blocked. Cool-touch housing prevents burns on contact. A child lock freezes the controls. They are four separate features.

Tip-over cutoff

A weighted switch — typically a spring-loaded plunger in the base, or in older designs a mercury tilt switch — that is held closed by the heater's own weight standing upright. Lift or tilt the unit past a threshold and the switch opens, cutting power to the element.

It exists because the realistic bad outcome is not dramatic. It is a heater lying face-down on a carpet, a bed or a pile of laundry with its element still energized, after a foot, a pet or a vacuum cleaner caught it. Tall tower heaters are the most exposed to this by geometry, which is why it is a feature to insist on for that shape specifically.

Overheat protection (thermal cutoff)

A thermal switch inside the unit that opens when the internal temperature exceeds a set limit. The scenario it covers is more common than tipping: blocked airflow. A towel draped over the grille, a heater pushed against the back of a sofa, an air intake choked with dust, a curtain that fell across the front.

In any of those cases the element keeps producing 1,500 W and the heat stops leaving, so the internal temperature climbs. The thermal cutoff opens before it reaches ignition temperatures. Most units reset automatically once they cool; some require unplugging.

If your heater cuts out and restarts by itself repeatedly, that is not a fault to work around — it is the thermal cutoff doing its job, and it means the airflow is blocked. Find out what is blocking it.

Cool-touch housing

Construction and airflow design that keeps the exterior surfaces below a temperature that would burn on brief contact. This is a burn-prevention feature, not a fire-prevention one, and the distinction matters.

A cool-touch heater's grille and the air leaving it are still hot. It will still ignite a curtain resting against the outlet. The three-foot clearance rule applies identically to a cool-touch unit and a bare radiator; what changes is what happens when a hand or a paw lands on the side of the case.

Child lock

An electronic lock that freezes the control panel so settings cannot be changed until it is released. This is the most under-supplied feature in the category and the one most worth insisting on in a household with toddlers — a heater sits at exactly the height a small child explores, with buttons that light up.

Note the limits: it locks the controls, not the heater. It does not prevent contact with a hot surface, and it does not prevent the unit being pushed over. In a nursery it is one of three requirements, not the whole answer — the full list.

Timer is included because unattended operation is a named contributing factor in the USFA's portable heater data — which makes it a safety feature whether or not it is sold as one.

And the thing no feature covers, which is worth repeating because it causes more fires than all of the above: clearance. The leading factor contributing to ignition in residential heating fires is misuse of material or product, a category the USFA defines as including a heat source too close to combustibles. No switch prevents a curtain being eight inches away.

Do all space heaters have tip-over protection?
