1,000 sq ft needs about 10,000 W at average insulation and an 8-foot ceiling — nearly seven plug-in heaters drawing 83 amps between them. No space heater covers 1,000 sq ft, and listings claiming to are describing airflow, not heating capacity.
The arithmetic, because it settles the question
1,000 sq ft × 10 W = 10,000 W. At 120 V that is 83.3 A of continuous draw, which would need seven dedicated 15 A circuits and would exceed the capacity of a 100 A residential service on its own.

Computed as square feet x 10 W x insulation factor x (ceiling / 8 ft), for an average heated room — 10 W/sq ft, 8 ft ceiling. Heater count assumes the 1,500 W plug-in ceiling.
And a 1,000 sq ft basement is worse, because below grade the unheated-envelope correction applies: 1,000 × 10 × 1.5 = 15,000 W. That is ten heaters, and it is the single clearest illustration on this site of why basement sizing is its own problem.
So what are those listings claiming?
“Heats up to 1,000 square feet” appears regularly on 1,500 W heaters, and it is not a lie about the wattage — the wattage is printed correctly two lines below. It is a claim about air circulation: a strong fan can move warm air a long way, so in a mild, open, already-heated space you will feel something from the heater 25 feet away.
What it cannot do is raise the temperature of that volume against outdoor heat loss, which is what heating means. The energy budget does not care how far the fan throws. If you are reading a listing and its coverage claim would require more than 1,500 W at 10 W per square foot, you have learned something about that listing that should change how you read the rest of it — including the safety features.
What would actually heat 1,000 square feet
A central heating system. This is a whole-floor load, and it is the job furnaces, boilers and ducted heat pumps exist to do.
Two or three 240 V hardwired unit heaters, on dedicated circuits, for a garage or shop. Even then, 10,000 W is two 5,000 W units and a panel that can carry them.
A ducted or multi-head heat pump. The only technology that delivers this much heat for a fraction of the electricity, because it moves heat rather than making it. The comparison.
Or: heat less of it. A 150 sq ft zone inside a 1,000 sq ft floor is a job one heater does well. This is the answer for almost everyone who arrives at this page.
