A bathroom heater needs to work in minutes, not half an hour, and needs to fit where there is no floor space. A wall-mounted unit with scheduling is the strongest answer; a small fast ceramic unit is the budget one. Keep any portable heater well away from the tub or shower and use a GFCI-protected outlet.

The rules that come before the shopping

Every other room on this site is a sizing problem. A bathroom is a placement problem with a sizing footnote, so the constraints go first.

Portable heaters are not wet-location equipment. They pull room air through a grille across a live element, and they are a substantial mains load. Manufacturer instructions for portable heaters commonly warn against use in the immediate vicinity of a bath or shower, and that warning is the one to take literally rather than creatively.

Bathroom receptacles are GFCI-protected, and that is a requirement of the National Electrical Code rather than a nicety. If you are plugging a heater in anywhere near water, that protection is the thing standing between a fault and you. Bathrooms are small, which for once works in your favor. At 10 W per square foot a typical bathroom needs well under a single heater's output — and because the room is small and usually has the door shut, it comes up fast.

Any portable heater placed where it can be reached from the bath or shower

This is the entry rule for the room and it disqualifies placements rather than products. A portable space heater is not a wet-location appliance: it is not sealed, it draws room air through a grille, and it is a 12.5 A mains load. Manufacturers' own instructions for portable heaters routinely say not to use them in the immediate vicinity of a bath, shower or swimming pool. Keep any portable unit well outside reach of the tub and shower, plug it into a GFCI-protected outlet — bathroom receptacles are required to be GFCI-protected under the NEC — and if the only workable spot is close to the water, the answer is a fixed heater installed for the location, not a portable one moved closer.

An oil-filled radiator, in this room specifically

Oil-filled radiators are the top pick in our bedroom roundup and they are the wrong tool here for one reason: they take twenty to thirty minutes to warm up because they must heat several kilograms of steel and oil first. You are in a bathroom for a fraction of that. By the time it is doing useful work you have dried off and left, and you have paid for the whole warm-up. Speed is the requirement in this room and it is the one thing that type cannot offer.

Humidity, and the thing it does not do

Warming a bathroom lowers its relative humidity at constant moisture content, which is why a heated bathroom clears its mirror faster and feels less clammy. That is a real and pleasant effect.

It is not ventilation, and it does not solve a mold problem. Moisture removed from the air by warming it is still in the room; only an extractor fan or an open window takes it outside. A heater makes a damp bathroom more comfortable while leaving the underlying moisture exactly where it was.
