For a home office, a compact heater with a published low setting is usually the right buy: a person at a desk needs far less heat than the room does. Check what else is on the circuit first — a 1,500 W heater plus a desktop computer can exceed a 15 A branch circuit's continuous limit.
A home office is typically 80–120 sq ft, which at 10 W per square foot needs 800–1,200 W — comfortably inside one heater's capability, and comfortably inside a 900 W low setting for much of the year. But there is a better framing available here than in any other room: you are stationary, in one chair, for hours. Radiant heat aimed at a person from three feet away makes them comfortable at a fraction of the energy it takes to raise a room's air temperature.

An eight-hour working day on a 900 W setting is a materially different number from the same day at 1,500 W, and in a 100 sq ft office the low setting is very often enough once the room is up to temperature. This is the room where the low-setting habit pays best, because the runtime is long and predictable.
Home offices concentrate load. A desktop under sustained use, two monitors, a docking station, speakers, a laser printer and a heater are all on the outlets in one small room, and in most houses those outlets share a breaker with the rest of that side of the floor.
The arithmetic is unforgiving: 12.5 A for the heater leaves nothing on a 12 A continuous allowance. Running the heater at 900 W instead brings it to 7.5 A and leaves genuine headroom. If you want full output, find an outlet on a different circuit — how to work out which outlets share a breaker.

A 1,500 W heater on the same circuit as your computer and monitors
This is the office-specific failure and almost nobody flags it. A 1,500 W heater draws 12.5 A continuously; a 15 A circuit supports 12 A continuously. Add a desktop, two monitors, a laser printer's startup surge and a phone charger and you are past the limit before the heater has done anything wrong. The consequence is not a fire — it is a tripped breaker in the middle of a video call, or worse, at the moment the printer's motor kicks in. Either run the heater on a low setting or find an outlet on a different breaker. The arithmetic.
A tower heater under a desk
Tall, narrow units are designed to oscillate into a room from an open floor. Under a desk they are in a confined space surrounded by a chair, a computer tower, a wastebasket and cables — every one of which is either a combustible or an airflow blockage, and the latter is what trips a thermal cutoff. A short, wide unit designed to sit on or under a desk is a better shape for the space, and it is a shape you can actually keep clear.
If the office is not yours, check the policy before you buy. Many commercial leases and most managed workspaces prohibit personal heaters outright, and the reason is exactly the circuit arithmetic above — a building's per-desk power allowance was not designed with a 12.5 A appliance in mind. A heated desk mat or a low-wattage personal heater is usually the version that survives a facilities conversation.
- A published low setting is weighted heavily, because a person at a desk needs far less than a room does.
- Physical footprint, since the space under a desk is the only space available and it still needs clearance.
- Circuit compatibility, because an office outlet is usually already carrying a computer, a monitor and a printer.
