A basement needs roughly 15 W per square foot, not 10 — the 1.5 unheated-envelope correction — because below-grade walls sit against soil that stays cold all winter. A 400 sq ft basement therefore needs about 6,000 W, which is four plug-in heaters or a different strategy entirely.

Why the rule fails here specifically

The 10 W per square foot rule assumes a room inside a heated envelope: the rooms around it are warm, so heat only escapes outward through one or two walls. A basement breaks that in three ways at once. Its walls and floor are in contact with soil at a temperature that barely moves all winter. It is usually the least insulated part of the house. And warm air rises, so whatever heat you make wants to leave through the ceiling.

Those numbers are the reason this page opens with arithmetic rather than with a product. There is no plug-in heater on the market that closes that gap in a full-sized basement, and any roundup that implies otherwise is selling you a disappointment.

Damp is a comfort factor, and heat is part of the answer

A cold basement feels worse than its thermometer suggests because relative humidity rises as air cools. Raising the air temperature lowers relative humidity at constant moisture content, which is why a heated basement feels dramatically less clammy than an unheated one at the same absolute humidity. That is a genuine benefit and it is worth knowing — but it is not dehumidification, and a heater will not fix an actual moisture-ingress problem.

Sizing a basement with the plain 10 W per square foot rule

This is the most expensive mistake in this section, and it is a mistake of arithmetic rather than product choice. A 600 sq ft basement is not 6,000 W of demand — it is 6,000 × 1.5 for the unheated-envelope correction, which is 9,000 W, or six plug-in heaters. Buy one heater on the strength of the uncorrected rule and you will conclude that the heater is bad. It is not. The room is six times bigger than the heater.

A heater on the floor in a basement with any history of water

Basements flood, sump pumps fail, and a heater is a mains appliance with a fan intake near the ground. If your basement has ever had standing water, a floor-standing unit is the wrong form factor regardless of which one it is. A wall-mounted heater costs the same and removes the entire scenario. This is a placement rule, not a product rule — but it disqualifies most of the products.

The circuit question is sharper down here

Basement circuits are frequently shared with the laundry, the freezer, the sump pump and the workshop outlets. Adding a continuous 12.5 A load to a circuit that also runs a sump pump is a bad idea for reasons that have nothing to do with heating: if the breaker trips while you are upstairs, the thing that stops is the pump. What size heater do I need for a 1000 sq ft basement?

About 15,000 W at the corrected 15 W per square foot for an unheated envelope — ten plug-in heaters. That is not a space heater problem. The practical answer is to heat a partitioned area, or to extend the central system.

Will a space heater dry out a damp basement?

It will lower relative humidity by raising the air temperature, which makes the space feel much less clammy. It does not remove moisture. If water is entering the basement, a heater treats the symptom and a dehumidifier or drainage work treats the cause.

Are infrared heaters good for basements?

Often the best choice, because radiant heat warms you and the surfaces around you directly rather than trying to raise the temperature of a large, cold, poorly insulated volume of air.

Is it safe to leave a space heater running in an unfinished basement?

Only with the same 3-foot clearance as anywhere else, which is harder in a basement full of stored boxes. Unfinished basements are also where combustibles get stacked against walls, and that proximity is the leading factor in heating fires.
