For a room under about 150 sq ft, any 1,500 W heater has enough output — a 150 sq ft room needs about 1,500 W and a 100 sq ft room only 1,000 W. Choose on thermostat accuracy, a published low setting and a tip-over cutoff, not on power.
This is the one room size where you have surplus capacity, and surplus capacity is only useful if the heater knows when to stop. A 1,500 W unit in a 100 sq ft bedroom will hit the setpoint quickly and then spend the night cycling. How well it cycles is the entire difference between a $20 month and a $60 one.

Notice that every one of those rooms is inside a single heater's capability, which is why this is the easiest room size to buy for and the one where people most often overpay. There is nothing a $400 heater does in a 100 sq ft room that a $45 one with a digital thermostat does not.
A published low setting is the most under-appreciated feature in this category. Running at 900 W instead of 1,500 W costs exactly 60% as much per hour, with no efficiency penalty — half the power is half the heat, linearly. In a 100 sq ft room that needs about 1,000 W, the low setting is not a compromise, it is the correct setting.

A 1,500 W heater with a dial thermostat, in a room under 100 sq ft
1,500 W in a 100 sq ft room is 15 W per square foot — half again what the room needs. That is fine if the thermostat is accurate, because the heater simply cycles off. With an unmarked dial you cannot set a temperature, only a position, and the usual result is a room at 75°F that you then ventilate. You are paying for the overshoot every hour. In a small room, spend the money on the control, not the element.
“Mini” heaters rated at 300–500 W sold as room heaters
At 10 W per square foot, 500 W covers 50 sq ft — a walk-in closet, not a room. These units work perfectly well as personal heaters aimed at one person from two feet away, and they are honest at that job. Sold as a room heater for a bedroom, the arithmetic simply is not there, and no amount of thermostat quality fixes a wattage that is a third of what the room needs.
The clearance problem nobody mentions
The USFA's guidance is three feet of clear space around a heater in every direction. In a 400 sq ft living room that is a formality. In a 90 sq ft bedroom with a bed, a nightstand and a dresser, three feet of clear floor may genuinely not exist — and this is the room size where people quietly ignore the rule because the alternative is not buying a heater at all.
Two ways out. A tabletop unit on a hard, clear surface gets the heater off the floor and away from bedding, and it keeps the cord off the ground. A wall-mounted heater removes the clearance problem below it entirely. Both are better answers than a floor unit wedged between a bed and a curtain.
- A thermostat you can set to a number. In a small room a heater spends most of its time cycling, so overshoot is the whole cost story.
- A published low setting where possible. 900 W in a 100 sq ft room is often ample, and it costs exactly 60% of 1,500 W per hour.
- A published tip-over cutoff. Small heaters live on desks and beside beds, which is exactly where they get knocked.
- Physical size. A small room's problem is usually that there is nowhere to put anything, let alone with 3 feet of clearance.
